#005: Let Them Be Wrong! Why You Don’t Need Everyone to Like You to Succeed in Business

Jan 15, 2025

Have you ever hesitated to post something online because you worried about what others would think? Maybe it was a bold opinion, a reel you spent hours perfecting, or a piece of your story you weren’t sure you were ready to share.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Showing up in your business, especially when it’s rooted in purpose and mission, can feel vulnerable. But here’s the truth: not everyone will like you, and that’s okay. In fact, it’s better than okay—because the people who matter will.

In Episode 005 of The Business of Good, we’re diving into a question from a listener who’s struggling with the fear of judgment. Together, we’ll explore why this fear exists, how it holds us back, and actionable steps to move past it so you can show up confidently and serve your audience authentically.

Why Are We So Afraid of Judgment?

Let’s start by understanding where this fear comes from. Believe it or not, it’s hardwired into our brains. Thousands of years ago, being rejected by the group could mean losing safety and survival. While we’re no longer living in caves, our brains still react to rejection as if it’s a life-threatening event.

For entrepreneurs, especially those driven by purpose, this fear is often amplified. Your work isn’t just a product or service—it’s a reflection of your values and your mission. The idea of judgment or criticism feels deeply personal, making it easy to hesitate or hold back.

But here’s the thing: staying silent doesn’t protect you. It holds you back. When you try to please everyone, you end up connecting with no one.

Why You Don’t Need Everyone to Like You

Some of the most successful businesses and leaders in the world didn’t achieve greatness by trying to appeal to everyone. They stood firm in their values, focused on their people, and embraced the fact that not everyone would agree with them.

You’re not here to serve everyone. You’re here to serve the people who resonate with your unique voice, perspective, and expertise. And when you shift your focus to serving them, the fear of judgment starts to lose its grip.

4 Steps to Overcome the Fear of Judgment

1. Understand Where the Fear Comes From

The first step in overcoming fear is naming it. Acknowledge that your brain is wired to avoid rejection—but remind yourself that modern rejection isn’t life-threatening.

Try this exercise: write down your fears and ask yourself, “What’s the worst that could happen?” Then, ask, “How likely is that, really?” This process helps you put things in perspective and reduces the power of fear.

2. Reframe the Fear

Instead of focusing on who might not like your message, think about who needs to hear it. Picture your ideal client—the person whose life could change because of what you have to say.

Every time you create content, imagine speaking directly to that person. It’s not about pleasing everyone; it’s about connecting with those who matter most.

3. Take Small, Brave Steps

Courage isn’t something you wake up with—it’s something you build over time. Start small. Share a single post, a short story, or a win from your week.

Think of each action as building a muscle. Over time, those small steps add up, and your confidence grows. Track your progress and celebrate every moment of bravery—it’s all part of the journey.

4. Remember Your Why

When fear feels overwhelming, reconnect with your purpose. Why did you start your business? What impact do you want to make?

Write down your “why” and keep it somewhere visible. Let it be your anchor when self-doubt creeps in. Your mission is bigger than your fear, and the world needs your voice.

Let Them Be Wrong About You

Here’s a powerful mindset shift: you don’t have to explain yourself to everyone. Some people won’t understand your intentions, and that’s okay. Let them be wrong about you.

Instead of trying to win over critics, focus on the people who already believe in your mission. By showing up for them, you’ll create a greater impact than you ever could by trying to please the masses.
